Despite a wet and miserable start to the day in Cork, things had dried up nicely by the time the Midleton 5 mile road race got underway. A total of 508 runners took part in the race, an increase of 27% on last year's figure of 401 (2010 = 329, 2009 = 294, 2008 = 240).
The winner of the men's race was Alan O'Shea in a time of 25:00, way ahead of his nearest rival Dzintars of West Waterford AC in second place. The contest for third place was more closely contested with John Meade of St.Finbarr's AC edging it in 26:55 with two seconds to spare.
The first woman home was Sinéad Nà Chonchúir of Eagle AC in a time of 29:49 with Annmarie Holland just behind in 30:05. Karen Grant from Midleton was third with 33:05.

Facebook Competition.....The winner of the competition on the Running in Cork Facebook Page was Aiden Twomey from Midleton. He guessed that the winning time for the first woman would be 29:50, just one second away from the actual time of 29:49. Aiden wins a free entry to the Bandon Half-Marathon and 10k on Saturday, the 12th of May. Pre-entries for that race close on the 7th of May.
