A former Fianna Fáil councillor who twice contested the general election has been remanded in custody for sentencing after pleading guilty to charges of forgery and the theft of over €18,000 worth of shop and refrigeration equipment.
Ger Killally was remanded until Monday week for sentencing Ger Killally, 42, from Edenderry ran for the Dáil on the same ticket as former Taoiseach Brian Cowen in 1997 and 2002.Westmeath Circuit Court was told this afternoon that Mr Killally, a former land dealer and developer, had been declared bankrupt in July 2009.
However, he had subsequently removed the shop and refrigeration equipment from a premises in Rochfortbridge, Co Westmeath which he previously owned.
He also pleaded guilty to forging documents between December 2010 and February 2011.
The court was told Mr Killally was the father of four children under the age of 10 and had brought a cheque to court to repay the money to the High Court assignee who was looking after the property he used to own.
Judge Tony Hunt was told Mr Killally suffers from depression and anxiety and was under severe financial stress when he took the equipment.
Counsel for Mr Killally told the court the former developer had "brushed shoulders with kings" but his fall from grace had been dramatic and he was now isolated and only surrounded by his family.
Judge Hunt said he would have to bear in mind that this was his first offence and that Killally had entered a guilty plea.
He remanded Mr Killally in custody until next Monday week when he will finalise a sentence.
