Danfoss Heat Pumps in Monaghan Leisure Center
The Coral Leisurecentre in Monaghan town has taken a major step towards the elimination of therequirement for fossil fuels – with the installation of a new DanfossGeothermal heat pump system – thanks to Dundalkbased firm Heat Pumps Ireland.
The leisure Centreon the Clones Roadwhich is owned jointly by Monaghan Town & County Councils and operated by CoralLeisure, now boasts one of the mostefficient and advanced renewable heating systems in the country.
Heat Pumps Ireland hasbeen able to replace an LPG boiler with a geothermal heat pump system thatextracts energy from boreholes drilled 300 feet into the ground around thebuilding. The system was installed at the end of 2011 and already substantialsavings have been delivered. It is expected that the heating energy costs for theSwimming pool, baby pool, Jacuzzi, hot water cylinders, changing rooms andentrance foyer underfloor heating will be halved. Savings could increasefurther with the current high prices of heating oil in the market.
The project was co-ordinatedby the County Council who received generous grant assistance from theDepartment of Transport, Tourism & Sport (DTTaS) with Helen Casey of HTCConsulting being engaged to supervisethe project along with a number of other energy saving and accessibilitymeasures at the centre.
Heat Pumps Irelandspecified and managed the project – which was completed on December 16 thof last year after a 4 week installation period. This is one of the firstgeothermal heated leisure centres in Ireland.
