Breaking news Ireland, garda arrested, sex assault, rape, garda ombudsman commission,
A GARDA has been arrested by investigators from the Garda Ombudsman Commission about an alleged rape.
Sources say that the alleged sexual assault concerns an allegation of an incident that occurred in the Midlands about a year ago.
The garda was not on duty at the time and it is understood that the alleged victim was not underage.
It is understood that the garda and the alleged victim were known to each other.
It has been alleged that the garda showed up at the victim’s house and raped her.
The garda has previously been suspended from his duties by the Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan.
He is being detained today at Loughrea Garda Station in Co Galway.
He is the first member of the force to be arrested by the Garda Ombudsman since it was set up five years ago.
A GSOC spokesman told the Evening Herald: “I can confirm that a member of the gardai has been arrested following an allegation of a criminal offence.
“We will not make any further comment at this time.”
The garda who was arrested is not the same garda who was arrested and questioned about allegedly raping a vulnerable sex abuse victim in his garda station recently.
Last month, it was revealed that the garda was arrested and questioned about allegedly raping a vulnerable sex abuse victim in his garda station. A file will now be prepared for the DPP after the officer, who is in his 40s, was released without charge.
He had been questioned for 24 hours by specialist detectives in a garda station in the Midlands.
The rape is alleged to have happened in the west of Ireland station in 2010, after the garda built up a relationship with the woman by falsely claiming he was a family liaison officer.
That case came to light when the alleged victim told a solicitor what had happened, which led to a formal complaint and a massive investigation.
